Maintenance of Ground Engaging Tools is just as important as maintenance of any other machine component or system. Proper maintenance of a tool such as a wheel loader bucket will maximise the life of the bucket and the GET protecting the bucket. For example, maintaining the bucket leveller will assist in getting even wear of the bucket teeth or edge.
Everyone has their part when it comes to maintenance. Part of the operators daily walk around a machine should include checking for worn, damaged or missing GET components, inspecting welds in high wear areas and looking for balanced wear patterns. If operators find that the corner teeth are wearing faster, they should have the training to know what to do to correct the problem. In fact, anytime anyone looks at a machine (for an oil change, engine repair, undercarriage service etc) they should take a look at the GET. These visual checks are important, because an operator cannot always tell if there is a GET problem by the feel of the machine.

Maintenance tips are provided in the Operations and Maintenance Manuals as well as in publications available from Gough Cat.
