The Gough Group is one of the largest employers of Heavy Automotive Apprentices in New Zealand with over 50 apprentices at any one time. We offer Apprenticeships in a number of Heavy Automotive and Engineering strands that will set you up for a successful career within the industry.
Our Goughs Institute of Training in-house facility gives our Apprentices invaluable knowledge, training and support and allows the opportunity to provide Apprenticeships throughout the company.
Your Apprenticeship success will offer endless opportunities for a diverse long-term career within the Gough Group. Working in Antarctica, open coal or gold mining locations, leadership or technical roles are just a few options open to you. Many of our team members began their careers as a Gough Apprentice and have enjoyed diverse careers full of highlights and achievements.
As an apprentice you will complete a 4 year apprenticeship training programme. Practical and theory skills are learnt by distance learning, on the job training, in-house product training and off-job polytechnic courses. Your practical skills are developed in our workshops and in the field where you will work alongside our qualified Heavy Diesel Technicians, Fitters and Engineers.
Upon completion of your chosen apprenticeship you will hold one of these National Certificates
- Heavy Automotive – Plant & Equipment
- Heavy Automotive – Material Handling
- Heavy Automotive – Road Transport
- Heavy Engineering – Heavy Fabrication
- Heavy Engineering – Fitting/Machining
What we look for
Completing a 4 year apprenticeship takes discipline, dedication and hard work.
We look for personal qualities of strong mechanical aptitude, passion in everything you do, an eye for detail, enthusiasm, the ability to work well in a team and solve problems.
You will also require
- A minimum on three years secondary school education, having achieved good results in English, Maths and NCEA level 2/NCEA level 1
- Full Class 1 driving licence
- Polytech pre-employment automotive training would be highly regarded as would relevant work experience
- Ability to work with lubricants and fuels
- Computer skills

We believe our Apprentices are the future of our business and we want to be sure that we get the right people with the right skills and attitude to make a difference.
We typically recruit for Apprentices on an annual basis, advertising our opportunities in September/October for a January start the following year.
Our process includes submitting an application form with requested documents, reference checking, phone interview with our Recruitment team, branch interview with our Branch and Service Managers, Assessment Centre, work experience, psychometric testing and pre-employment medical.
